The Best Summer Blues

Summer is in full swing, which means soaking up every last drop of gorgeous California sunshine and enjoying the longer days to the fullest. With it, though, inevitably comes the sweltering heat that is at times borderline unbearable. While temps continue to soar here in L.A., topping 114 degrees only yesterday, I've been reaching for lightweight, airy, and cool pieces that are easy to wear, especially on the weekends. Sundresses check all of those boxes for me and are both practical and pretty for Summer.

Lately, I've been drawn to beautiful blue-n-white combos. I think it's because it reminds me of the tonal blues of the ocean and of the soft, white sands and salty air of the beach and all the nostalgia it evokes. There's just something undeniably fresh about this color combo.

This Kate Spade Lantern Poplin Flounce Dress in a striking cobalt/white duo is a stunner and one of my new favorites. If you read my recent sale blog posts here and here, you know this dress was one of my recent sale picks that I finally pulled the trigger on, and I'm so happy I did. The intermixed print is so eye-catching! I love the large quatrefoil print contrasted by the small tile print on the straps, neckline, waist, and upper hem of the skirt. Kate Spade describes the print of this dress as one that was actually inspired by the look of moroccan lanterns. If you've ever seen moroccan lanterns or  moroccan architecture in general with its geometric-floral tile designs, colorful mosaic plasterwork and marble, you know how lavish and ornate it is. This dress is the perfect representation of it. The color, the style, the fit -- it's modern, feminine, definitely ornate, and so charming!

If you adore this lantern print, I noticed that Kate Spade offers it in a variety of other pieces from swimsuits to scarves and more -- see below.

This dress is also quite similar in style and pattern to the Vince Camuto Apron Floral Fit & Flare Dress I own and love (thanks, Jean!) with a few key exceptions that I wanted to point out. First, the Vince Camuto dress is fully lined, whereas this Kate Spade dress is not. I was disappointed with this omission, especially for the price point (even on sale) and somehow overlooked it in the description on the KS website before ordering. Since the material is fairly thin, a half-slip is essential when wearing this dress. The flounce hem also catches any slight breeze, so the slip helps to prevent any accidental peek-a-boo incidents. ;-)

The Vince Camuto dress also doesn't have pockets, but this one does! Dresses with pockets are always my favorite, so I'm very pleased with this added detail.

The last key difference is that the Vince Camuto dress is noticeably longer than the Kate Spade dress (I'll share measurements below) and also comes in petite sizing, whereas the KS dress does not. That said, I've found that several Kate Spade dresses in sizes 00-2 are generally equivalent to the petite sizes offered by other brands, so they're still very petite-friendly. (I'm 5'2" and ~99 lbs. for fit reference.)

Here are the measurements of both dresses for comparison, taken while laying flat:

Kate Spade Lantern Poplin Flounce Dress
Size 0
~14" armpit to armpit
~12 1/8" across waist
~33 1/2" overall length (shoulder to hem)

Vince Camuto Apron Floral Fit & Flare Dress*
Size 00P
~13 1/2" armpit to armpit
~12" across waist
~37" overall length (shoulder to hem)

As you can see, the Vince Camuto dress runs slightly smaller in the bodice, but longer in length. I love both dresses for their own reasons, but wanted to share the differences for those of you considering either dress.

Overall, this is beautiful sundress to add to your rotation! It would be darling for any upcoming outdoor weddings, garden parties, luncheons, and more. Or if you're an avid dress-lover like I am, you really don't need a special "occasion" to wear it; throw it on with sandals and a sun hat to grab a quick bite and run errands. Why not? Life is short, wear the dress!

To round out this "Summer blues" look, I added neutral accessories with a vintage wicker bag from Etsy (shop similar below) and nude ankle-tie sandals from Ann Taylor. They keep the focus on the dress, which already has details aplenty!

To pop against the cobalt-blue, I also added a swipe of my favorite matte lipcolor in a vivid pink ("Spark.")  Blue and pink always pair nicely and I wanted to add a touch more vibrancy for this weekend look; it helps brighten the face, too.

Thanks so much for stopping by, and I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
